Jule Holten Jr.

Jule Dewey Holten, Jr., 89 of Swansea, Ill., born Saturday, May 28, 1927, in East St. Louis, Ill., died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2016, at Mercy Rehabilitation Center in Swansea, Ill.

Mr. Holten was a United States Navy Veteran serving during WWII on the USS Hank and the USS Purvis.

In January 1949, Mr. Holten was certified as a licensed embalmer and in March 1949 he became a licensed funeral director with the State of Illinois. After serving in the Navy, Mr. Holten and his Father, J. Dewey Holten, Sr. opened the Holten Ambulance Service in E. St. Louis. They provided ambulance service for the city of E. St. Louis and for Cahokia Racetrack and Fairmont Racetrack. In May 1959, he opened Holten Mortuary at 7717 State Street in E. St. Louis. In 1972, he relocated to 7711 West Main Street in Belleville and began operations under the name of Holten Funeral Home. He served as a Deputy Coroner for St. Clair County. Mr. Holten retired in 2010 from Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home in Belleville.

Dewey took great pride in the many families that he served over his sixty one years as a licensed funeral director. He was committed to excellence in all aspects of his business. He dedicated himself to providing his families with not only professional but personal and compassionate service.

Dewey was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and gardening.

Dewey was a member of the Illinois Funeral Directors Association for over 50 years, National Funeral Directors Association, Knights of Columbus 592, V.F.W. Post 805 (Life Member), an original member of Our Pal's, E. St. Louis, Ill., and a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Dewey and Ann, nee Eisele, Holten Sr., and an infant sister, Marguerite Holten.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Rosemary, nee White, Holten, whom he married on April 10, 1950 at St. Patrick's Church in E. St. Louis, Ill.; son and daughter-in-law , Dr. J. Dewey Holten, III (Dr. Christine Kirmaier) of St. Louis, Mo.; daughter and son-in-law, Julia Holten Roberts (John D. Roberts) of Belleville, Ill.; daughter and son-in-law, Lori Denise Allen (J. Eddie Allen) of Birmingham, Ala.; three grandchildren; Jonah Everest Allen, Tessa Rose Allen, and Creed Edward Allen; a sister, Geraldine "Jerry" Pabst of Belleville, Ill., and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016 at Kurrus Funeral Home Belleville, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016, at Kurrus Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill. with Fr. Kenneth York officiating. Burial will follow at Valhalla Gardens of Memory in Belleville, Ill.
