Kenneth E. Chesley

Obituary Condolences

Two people were killed during the downpour late Thursday morning in a three-vehicle crash just east of the Fairview Heights MetroLink station.

Kenneth E. Chesley, 22, of Fairview Heights was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of a second vehicle, John A Duncan, 63, of East St. Louis, was taken to Memorial Hospital in Belleville, where he later died from his injuries. The occupants of a third vehicle were taken from the accident by family members.

Fairview Heights Police Lt. Ron Burckhardt said the rain may have played a part in the crash.

Police were called at 10:50 a.m. Thursday to the crash in the eastbound lanes of St. Clair Avenue east of Montclair Drive, Burckhardt said. Fairview Heights and French Village firefighters had to free the occupants from the cars.

The police investigation was just starting Thursday, but Burckhardt said it appeared the car driven by Chesley was traveling west on St. Clair Avenue when it crossed over the center median into the eastbound lanes. It was struck on the driver's side by Duncan's vehicle, Burckhardt said.

A third vehicle traveling east then struck the other two vehicles. The occupants were not injured and were able to leave with family members.

Illinois State Police are reconstructing the accident.
