Lena Behnken

Lena Behnken, 102, of Chester, Ill., born Dec. 7, 1913, in St. Clair County, Ill., passed away at 7:43 p.m. Friday, March 4, 2016, at Three Springs Lodge Nursing Home in Chester, Ill.

Lena was a retired teacher and was a member of the Randolph County Retired Teachers, the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, Randolph County Farm Bureau and SIU Alumni. She was also a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Chester, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Fred "Charlie" Behnken, whom she married on Aug. 18, 1940, in Baldwin, Ill., and who died Nov. 13, 1993; parents, Ferdinand and Emilie, nee Luebkemann, Sommer; son, Wayne Behnken; son-in-law, Richard Dethrow; two sisters, Goldie Bollmeier and Augusta Ohm; four brothers, Fred Sommer, Louie Sommer, Ferd Sommer and Rudolph Sommer; sister-in-law, Helen Sommer; and three brothers-in-law, Arkell Bollmeier, Leonard Ohm and Adolph Falkenheim.

Surviving are her daughter, Wanda Dethrow of Chester, Ill.; daughter-in-law, Sharon Behnken of Prairie du Rocher, Ill.; five siblings, Ella Falkenheim of Marissa, Ill., Mathilda Sommer of Marissa, Ill., Leona (Joe) Braun of Freeburg, Ill., Emilie Sommer of Marissa, Ill., and Frieda Sommer of Marissa, Ill.; four grandsons, Shawn Behnken, Joel Behnken, Nick Behnken, and Christopher (Jennifer) Behnken; two step-grandsons, Mike (Rose) Dethrow and Bill (Cheryl) Dethrow; two great-grandchildren, Amanda Behnken and Michael Behnken; a godchild, Erna Sieber; eight step great-grandchildren; 11 step great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation: Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 7, 2016, and from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at Pechacek-McClure Funeral Home, Chester, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2016, at the funeral home with Rev. Tim Sims officiating. Interment will be at Paradise Cemetery, Steeleville, Ill.
