A Highland man was killed and his wife critically injured early Saturday in a three-car collision in Clinton County.

Marvin Chaffin, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Clinton County Coroner David Moss. His wife, Grace Chaffin, 53, was in critical condition Monday at a St. Louis hospital.

The couple were traveling north on Illinois 160 at 12:14 a.m. Saturday when their vehicle was struck head-on by a 2008 Chrysler 300 driven by Sharon Kaufman, 46.

According to the police report, Kaufman's vehicle was traveling south when the car's windshield was struck by a bird and caused her to swerve into the northbound lane and hit the Chaffins' vehicle head-on. Police did not list her hometown.

While at rest on the highway, Kaufman's vehicle was struck again by an oncoming motorist, who "was distracted by a female on the side of the road waving her arms," according to the report.

The driver of the third vehicle, Chad Dockstader, 27, and his passenger, Jennifer Campbell, 36, were not injured in the accident.

Sharon Kaufman was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese, then transported to an unknown area hospital. Kaufman's passenger, Steven C. Kaufman, 49, did not require medical attention.

Funeral arrangements for Marvin Chaffin are pending.
