Mary E. Reed Obituary
Mary Reed

Mary Elizabeth Reed, nee Knewitz, 99, of Belleville, Ill., born September 19, 1916, in East St. Louis, Ill., died on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015.

She was a registered pharmacist, having graduated from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 1937. When Mary graduated, she was one of only two women in pharmacy school at the time. She worked at Fisher Pharmacy in Loisel Village, Ill., and at Hideg Pharmacy in Belleville, Ill. She was active as a pharmacist until 1994.

She was a past member of the Junior Service Club, Junior Wednesday Club, and St. Clair Country Club. Mary was a member of St. George's Episcopal church in Belleville, Illinois.

She played golf into her mid-80s and played competitive bridge until she was 97 years old.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Richard Reed, who died in 2000; her parents, Gerhard and Lu, nee Eldred, Knewitz; and her sister, Juanita Sparks.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Jane (Thomas) Dunck of Williamsburg, Va.; son, Rick (Elizabeth) Reed of Swansea, Ill.; and nephew, David (Louise) Sparks of Clemson, S.C.

Mary is also survived by six granddaughters, Shelley (Craig) Dunck Silverman, Lori (Ryan) Dunck Turochy, Tiffany (Matthew) Reed Lovell, Kelly (Stephen) Reed Skaff, Nicole (Matt) Reed Wilkins, and Allison Reed. Mary also has 17 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Mark Irwin of Belleville, Ill., who was her personal physician for more than 30 years. His compassion and expertise were greatly appreciated.

Memorials may be made to St. George's Episcopal Church in Belleville, Ill.

Mary was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She lived a long, full life and was truly the matriarch of the family. A person of her character and love is hard to find.
