Mary Katherine Martz, born Nov. 5, 1927, in East St. Louis, Ill., died March 15, 2016, surrounded by her loving family.

Mary Kay (Mary Katherine) was a member of St. Augustine Parish in Belleville. She was a 1945 graduate of St. Teresa Academy and actively worked on all of the reunions for her class. She was a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, of which she was a past president, secretary, and former state historian and she truly treasured her Irish heritage. Mary was also a former member of the Ladies Knights of Columbus 592, a volunteer at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, member of Cyrilian Guild of the former St. Cyril Parish, member of the 2nd Tuesday Club, member of the Mount Carmel Ladies Mass Group, Elegant Swans (former Red Hat Group), and several lunch groups with former employees of St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

Mary Kay and the late George Ames Martz, were married on Jan. 31, 1948 at St. Elizabeth's Parish in East St. Louis, Ill., by Msgr. Peter Engel. They had celebrated 35 years of marriage prior to George's death on Nov. 29, 1983.

Mary Kay had been a stay-at-home mother for 18 years. Her first job after returning to the work force was a secretary for School District 189, followed by a secretarial position at the former Assumption High School. Her last position, from which she retired, was as an administrative secretary in the nursing department of St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

Mary Kay was preceded in death by her husband, George Ames Martz; her parents, Elizabeth Irene Geiss and John Joseph Roarty; her aunt and uncle who raised her, Rose Roarty Klee and John Klee; her half brothers and sisters, Ethel O'Keefe, Lee, John, Aileen and Mickey Davis; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Al and Cecelia Ames Martz; brothers-in-law, Richard Martz and Allan Martz; nephew, Richard Martz; and dear friends, Helen Thoman Barillaro, Marguerite Stack, Carmen Soriano Martin, Mary Gunn Taylor and Betty Ann Reeb Holmes.

Surviving are her children, Kathleen Ann (James) Murphy, George Michael (Carole) Martz, Joseph Brian (Carol) Martz and Jon (Patty) Martz; her grandchildren, Dr. Caroline (Jason) Lee, Brigid M. (George) Smith, George Adam Martz, Erin Eve Martz, Katie Jo Martz, Elena Martz; Rocky, her granddog; her great-grandchildren, Carson Ames Lee and Darren Sims Lee; brother and sisters-in-law, Joseph Austin and Mary Ellen Roarty, Betty Martz and Carole Martz; nieces, Ann Marie Barnun and Joan Mathew; nephews, Tim Roarty, Tom Roarty, Mark Martz, Chris Martz and Steven Martz; dear cousins in the Utz family and George's cousins, the Ames family; and godmother to Tim Roarty, Mark Martz, Rose Pappas and Audrey Ames Touchette.

Visitation: Visitation will be held from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 18, 2016 at Kassly Mortuary, Fairview Heights, Ill. Hibernian prayer service will be at 6 p.m.

Funeral: A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2016 at St. Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill., with Msgr. Bill McGhee and Father Dennis Voss officiating. Interment will be held in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Belleville, Ill.
