Mary Kowalski, 99, of Granite City, Ill., born July 22, 1917, in East St. Louis, Ill., died at 1:08 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016 at Sycamore Village, Swansea, Ill.

Mary had worked as a beautician for Mercedes' Beauty Salon at the Spivey Building in East St. Louis, Ill., and was the owner of Mary's Beauty Salon on 14th St. and St. Clair in East St. Louis, Ill. She retired in 1969. Her husband, John was the owner of Johnnie's Confectionary on Henrietta's St. in East St. Louis. She was a member of several organizations including the USO Chapter in East St. Louis, Ill., Polish American War Veterans, Arlington Golf Association, St. Adalbert's Catholic Women's Auxiliary, Local Union of Cosmetology, and was a long time member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Granite City, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Kowalski, whom she married Feb. 17, 1947, at St. Adalbert Church, East St. Louis, Ill.; parents, Peter and Josephine, nee Leskowicz, Gula; sons, John Edward and Edward John Kowalski; brothers, Stanley, Walter, Edward and Michael Gula; a sister, Lottie Meirink; a son-in-law, Donald A. Larson; sisters-in-law, Marilyn and Theresa Gula; and a brother-in-law, Alfred Meirink.

Surviving are her daughters, Gerlyne J. Larson of Franklin Grove, Ill., and Mary L. (Alan J.) Amtmann Sr. of O'Fallon, Ill.; grandsons, Alan J. Amtmann Jr. of O'Fallon, Ill., Aviation Specialist Jacob D. (Alison) Amtmann of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jonathon J. Larson of Chicago, Ill.; and a granddaughter, Gwendolyn J. Larson of Rochelle, Ill.

Memorials may be made to the family and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Special thanks to all the staff at Sycamore Village Assisted Living in Swansea, Ill., for their loving care they presented to my mom and especially to Gina for allowing Mary to come home. I will always carry your memory in my heart.

Visitation: Friends may visit from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2016 at Thomas Saksa Funeral Home, Granite City, Ill., and from 9 a.m. until time of service Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Granite City, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church with Rev. Kenneth J. York, J.C.L., officiating. Burial will be in St. Adalbert Cemetery, Fairview Heights, Ill.
