Melvin O. Schwartz, 90, of Belleville, Ill., born Sunday, January 17, 1926, in Prairie DuPont, Ill., died Sunday, August 14, 2016, at St. Paul's Home, Belleville, Ill.
Melvin worked as a Machinist for Monsanto Corporation. He was a member of Local 12
Retirees Club (Monsanto), and the Merchant Marine Veterans Association, SS Samuel Parker Chapter - St. Louis. Melvin was a United States Merchant Marine, and Army Veteran serving in World War II, and the Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver L. and Edna nee Kurtz, Schwartz; a brother, James Schwartz; a brother and sister-in-law, Glenn M. and Mary Lou Schwartz; and a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and James Preshaw; a brother-in-law, Arlan "Stumpy" Lerch; and a granddaughter, Dawn M. Counsell.
Surviving are his wife, Ethel, nee Bonn, Schwartz of Belleville, Ill.; his children, Patricia L. (Tom) Counsell of Belleville, Ill., John L. (Gina) Schwartz of Staunton, Ill.; four sisters, Mary Janice (Charles) Clark of Waterloo, Ill., Edith F. Lerch of Waterloo, Ill., Karen D. Schwartz of Florida, and Cynthia A. Schwartz of Waterloo, Ill.; three grandchildren, Nathan A. Counsell, Nicholas R. Schwartz, and Kendra L. Schwartz; two great-grandchildren, Caleb Counsell, and Shelby Marie Counsell; a sister-in-law, Doris Schwartz of Millstadt, Ill.; a God Child, Brian S. Schwartz, and loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral: Funeral Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 18, 2016, at Kurrus Funeral Home, with Rev. Larry Patton officiating. Interment will follow in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
