A funeral for U.S. Marine Sgt. Nicholas Lee Hopper, of Montrose, will be held this morning in Effingham.

Hopper, 27, was born in Alton and attended Midway Elementary School in Moro. He graduated from Dietrich High School in Dietrich and attended Lake Land College in Mattoon before he enlisted in the Marines in January 2001.

Hopper died in Havelock, N.C. on Sept. 8 from wounds he received in Iraq in June 2005.

"Nick was the most compassionate, kind, generous person that I ever knew," said his mother, Judy Hopper of Montrose. "He was a loving father and a devoted husband."

Hopper received the following military honors: a Combat Action Ribbon, Purple Heart, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, National Defense Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, two Good Conduct Medals and a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

He is survived by his wife, Natividad; his son, Andrew; his mother, Judy Hopper; his father, Van Hopper, of Texas and a brother, Christopher Hopper, of Montrose.

Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. today at the M. A. Neal Funeral Home, 1110 N. 4th Street in Effingham.- The Rev. Stephen Gillet, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Effingham, will officiate.

Burial with full military honors will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield.
