Richard Smith Sr.

Richard C. Smith Sr., 89, of Glen Carbon, Ill., born Sept. 30, 1926, in Highland, Ill., died Friday, Jan. 1, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 9266, Troy, Ill., and was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. He was involved as an assistant scout master with the Troy Boy Scout Troop 38.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Evelyn, nee Rickli, Smith; a brother, Thomas Smith; and a brother-in-law, Louis Mitas.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Mary E., nee Fleischer, Smith, whom he married on Oct. 25, 1947, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, St. Louis, Mo.; a son, Richard C. (Sherry) Smith Jr. of Troy, Ill.; five daughters, Patrice (Robert) Schneider of Brighton, Ill., Margaret (Paul) Gillespie of Scottsdale, Ariz., Catherine (Dennis) Frank of Staunton, Ill., Rebecca (Christopher) Cueto of Boulder, Colo., and Maria (Jeffery) Wendler of St. Jacob, Ill.; 13 grandchildren, Joshua, Nicholas, Laura, Luke, Jennie, Jacob, Andrea, Neil, Ben, Ted, Carrie, Emma and Sarah; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles (Betty) Smith of St. Charles, Mo.; and two sisters, Marilyn Mitas of Mebane, N.C., and Nancy (Dennis) Dubach of Highland, Ill.

Visitation: Friends may visit from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill.

Funeral: A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 2016, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill., with Msgr. Jack McEvily officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
