Robert Owens

Robert G. Owens, 86, of Collinsville, Ill., born Feb. 27, 1927, in East St. Louis, Ill., died Friday, June 21, 2013, at his home.

Robert had many fond memories of his boyhood, growing up in St. Elizabeth's parish where he graduated from grade school in 1940. He then attended Central Catholic High School. During World War II, at the age of 17, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific theater on Landing Ships LST 1072 and LST 276. Robert was a life member of the VFW Post 1117, Caseyville, Ill.

Robert was a member of the International Association of Machinists for over 60 years. He worked as a machinist his entire career. He started as an apprentice at American Steel Foundry, East St. Louis, Ill., and then worked at Chandeysson Electric Co., St. Louis, Mo., and A.O. Smith Corp., Granite City, Ill. In 1962, he started his 29 years of service to Anheuser Busch Inc., St. Louis, Mo. He retired as a machinist foreman.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Zelma L., nee Lux, Owens, whom he married on Oct. 15, 1949, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church on the campus of St. Louis University, and who died Dec. 24, 2005; his parents, Beal and Lucy, nee Hamilton, Owens; his brother, Howard E. Owens; and his nephew, Michael D. Owens.

Surviving are his daughters, Nancy Parkinson of Collinsville, Ill., and Susan (Craig) O'Mara of Fairview Heights, Ill.; his grandchildren, Katie Parkinson of Portland, Ore., Joseph and Robert Parkinson, both of Collinsville, Ill., Christie Owens of New Baden, Ill., Lucy Acevedo of Fairview Heights, Ill., and Michael O'Mara of Avon, Colo.; a sister, Norma Trollard of Holmes Beach, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2013, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fairview Heights, Ill.

Funeral: A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 29, 2013, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fairview Heights, Ill., with Father Ray Schultz officiating.

A burial procession will leave Kassly Mortuary, Fairview Heights, Ill., at 8:15 a.m., Monday, July 1, 2013, for a 9 a.m. burial with military honors at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
