Robert George Schwalb, 87, of Edwardsville, Ill., born Dec. 24, 1928, in Edwardsville, Ill., passed away at 5:25 a.m. April 21, 2016, at his home.

Robert graduated from Edwardsville High School in 1946 and Brown Business School (St. Louis) in 1950. In June of 1950, Robert joined the Air Force and graduated at the top of his class at the personnel and administration school in Cheyenne, Wyoming. After serving at Scott Air Force Base in Belleville, Ill., he spent two years at the Japan Air Defense Force Headquarters in Nagoya, Japan where he was promoted to staff sergeant, non-commissioned officer in charge and received the highest rating as a senior personnel specialist.

After returning home to Edwardsville, Robert married Marian Gregor of Edwardsville in 1955. They raised three children (Joan, Rhonda, and Paul) before her death in 1969.

Robert was the owner of Modern Wholesale Supply Co., a heating and cooling supply house that he successfully grew for over 50 years. He also started a manufacturer's rep business in 1973 called Comfort Sales Agency. Robert won several sales awards in his 50+ years in business before his retirement in 2009.

He was active in the local Lions Club for over 40 years and was a former club president and zone chairman. He also was an active member in the VFW and American Legion. Robert was an avid bridge player and enjoyed fishing and working outdoors.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marian Gregor of Edwardsville; his parents, George and Eleanor, nee Hyten, Schwalb; and a sister, Jean Franz of Austin, Texas.

Mr. Schwalb is survived by his wife, Nancy L. (Miller), whom he married on August 16, 1970 at Eden United Church of Christ in Edwardville; six children, Joan (Kim) Ketcham of Edwardsville, Brian Cox of Grain Vally, Mo., Rhonda Schwalb of Edwardsville, Alyssa (Don) Maxwell of Edwardsville, Paul Schwalb and wife, Jennifer of Edwardsville, and Blair (Kimberly) Schwalb of Edwardsville; 13 grandchildren, Kerry (Jessie) Ketcham, Katie (Justin) Ketcham, Jason Cox, Brendan Cox, Logan Schwalb, Tyler Maxwell, Kristin Maxwell, Nick Schwalb, John Schwalb, Carter Schwalb, Spencer Schwalb, Avery Schwalb and Meredith Schwalb; two great-grandchildren, Koy and Kylie Ketcham; a sister, Mary (AI) Arth of Edwardsville; and a brother, Arlyn "Butch" (Verlene) Schwalb of Edwardsville.

Visitation: Friends may visit from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 24, 2016, at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home, Edwardsville, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 24, 2016, at the funeral home with Rev. John Roberts officiating. A private interment will be held at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates, Glen Carbon, Ill.
