Robert Verges, 85, of Belleville, Ill., born Oct. 3, 1930, in Belleville, Ill., passed away Saturday, March 19, 2016, at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, Ill.
A graduate of McKendree College, Lebanon, Ill., and the National FBI Academy, Robert retired from law enforcement after 30 years of service. During that time, he served with the Belleville Police Department, the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department as Chief Investigator, and the State of Illinois Department of Corrections. He was a member of the first Major Case Squad formed in the St. Louis area. He later worked as a substance abuse counselor.
Robert was a member of St. Peter's Cathedral Parish, Belleville, Ill. He was a U.S. Navy Korean War veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Clara, nee Koenig, Verges; and a sister, Vera Swankhause.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Jeannette, nee Wilbret, Verges; two daughters, Deborah Verges of Belleville, Ill.,
and Roberta Wilkin of Herculaneum, Mo.; and a grandson, Army Specialist Patrick Wilkin of Ft. Campbell, Ky.

Visitation: Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at St. Peter's Cathedral Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill.
Funeral: A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at St. Peter's Cathedral, with Msgr. John Myler officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
