1938 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
Roger L. Bechtoldt Obituary
Roger Bechtoldt

Roger Lee "Red" Bechtoldt, 73, of Belleville, Ill., born Sept. 25, 1938, in Belleville, Ill., left us on Monday, April 16, 2012, doing what he enjoyed most, spending time at his friend's cabin in Missouri.

Roger was the first of three sons born to Theophil Carl "Whitey" Bechtoldt and Lavina Louise Marie, nee Muskopf, Bechtoldt. He was an athlete at Belleville Township High School, from which he graduated in 1957, and was a proud member of the Black Knights Demolay of Belleville. He continued his education at barber college in Decatur, Ill., and purchased the House of Charles Barber and Beauty Salon in Belleville from Charlie Mercurio in 1960.

He enjoyed spending time with his customers at the barber shop and competing in hairstyling competitions, placing first, second, and third in Illinois, Missouri and national hairstyling competitions. As this was not enough to keep him busy, later in life he worked for Teamsters Local 50 and the St. Clair County Department of Roads and Bridges until his retirement in 2011.

When Roger wasn't cutting hair he was hunting or fishing. He was a member of the Illinois Bass Anglers Association, the Belleville South Bass Masters, the Southern Illinois Bass Masters, the St. Clair County Anglers Club, and the Eagles. He played baseball with Southside Improvement Association fast pitch and The Old Timers baseball leagues. Somehow he found time to skeet shoot and often mentioned that he beat Red Schoendienst in a round of skeet. Roger also played tennis with some really good coaches and friends, John and Jimmy Connors.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia C., nee Jennings, Bechtoldt, whom he married on July 3, 2003; his daughter, Tyanna Lee (Charles) Franke of Smithton, Ill.; two grandsons, Joseph Taylor "Tater" Franke of Smithton, Ill., and Charles Joseph "Chaz" (Kira) Franke of Belleville, Ill.; his former wife, Shirley Ann, nee Taylor, (Jim) Holten of Smithton, Ill.; his dear brothers, Wayne Arthur (Janese) Bechtoldt of Glenview, Ill., and Robert John (Linda) Bechtoldt of Annandale, Va.; dear nieces and nephews, Karl John (Sheila) Bechtoldt of Arlington Heights, Ill., Michael Harold (Renata) Bechtoldt and Catherine Louise Bechtoldt, both of Glenview, Ill., and Kristina Marie Bechtoldt and John Robert Bechtoldt, both of Annandale, Va.; a great-nephew, John Michael Bechtoldt; and great-nieces, Marie, Nicole, Emily, and Julia Bechtoldt.

Roger will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
