Shirley Long, 78, of Granite City, Ill., born Dec. 31, 1937, in Pinckneyville, Ill., passed away Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016, at Meridian Village, Glen Carbon, Ill.
Shirley was a faithful member of St. John United Church of Christ, Granite City, Ill., and a member of the Women's Guild at the church. Shirley had worked for Dr. Tom Martin for many years as a medical secretary. She was a former Girl Scout leader and soccer coach when her children were younger. Shirley enjoyed traveling with her grandchildren, boating and going to breakfast with her friends. Her greatest joy was taking care of and spending time with her family. Shirley loved life, she loved to laugh, but most of all she loved her family. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Long, whom she married March 24, 1956, and who passed away on Feb. 2, 2015; and her parents, William H. and Mildred L., nee Matson, O'Neil.
Surviving are her loving children, Brenda (Steve) Sander of New Douglas, Ill., Kathi (John) Ritchie of Granite City, Ill., Daniel (Melinda) Long of New Douglas, Ill., and Dina (Richard "Terry") Burch of Granite City, Ill.; dear sister, Marilyn O'Neil of Clearwater, Fla.; proud grandmother to eleven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren; extended family and many dear friends.

Visitation: Visitation will be held from 3 until 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City, Ill.
Funeral: In celebration of her life, memorial services will follow at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, 2016, at Irwin Chapel with Pastor Karla Frost officiating. Private family interment will be held at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates, Glen Carbon, Ill.
