Steward O. Mitchell, 98, of Highland, Ill., born Tuesday, Dec. 11, 1917, in Litchfield, Ill., died Friday, September 16, 2016, in Highland, Ill.
He was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, Highland, Ill.; United Auto Workers Local No. 31, Kansas City, Kan.; VFW Post No. 5694, Highland, Ill.; Lee Iten Post No. 439-American Legion, Highland, Ill.; and was a former member of Masonic Orders.
Steward was born near Litchfield, Ill., and at age 12 moved to West Alton, Mo. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. On May 4, 1945, 85 miles north of Okinawa, the ship he was on, the USS Little, was destroyed by Kamikazes. He survived and received the Purple Heart; he also had received the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon. He worked construction for 20 years and worked in the maintenance department at General Motors for 20 years. He retired in 1980. Mr. Mitchell lived in Mexico, Mo., until 1988, when he moved to Highland, Ill. He enjoyed walking, collecting knives and coins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary M. Mitchell, nee Gregory, whom he married in December 1950, at Walnut Grove, Ark., and who passed away March 16, 2012; parents, Clarence Osman and Belle, nee Hoover, Mitchell; two brothers, Archibald Hoover Mitchell and Theodore Russell Mitchell; and a sister, Virginia Lee Fahrig.
Surviving are his son, Donald S. (life partner, Sandy Kibble) Mitchell of Highland, Ill.; stepdaughters, Diana M. Tremor of Highland, Ill., Donna M. (Bob) DePew of Highland, Ill., and Darlene M. (life partner, Wayne Diebert) Phillips of Highland, Ill.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; numerous great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Christina (William) Fair of Wood River, Ill.; and a sister-in-law, Lenora Mitchell of St. Charles, Mo.
Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice or Evangelical United Church of Christ.
Visitation: Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016, and from 8 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home, Highland, Ill.
Funeral: Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home with Rev. Christopher W. Hill, Senior Pastor, Evangelical United Church of Christ, Highland, Ill., officiating. Interment will be at Highland City Cemetery.
