Lavern F. "Vern" Wood, 83, of East Carondelet, Ill., born May 25, 1932, in Dupo, Ill., passed away Feb. 20, 2016, at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Mr. Wood was a member of the First Baptist Church of Dupo, Ill., where he served as a Deacon for 42 years. Vern was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in that capacity during the Korean War. He was a member of Emeth Masonic Lodge, 1030, A.F.&A.M. He enjoyed bowling and square dancing, most especially his time with the Waterloo Quadrilles Square Dancing Club.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Lee and Clara Ellen, nee Lancaster, Wood; two brothers, Ralph and Wayne Wood; and three sisters, Helen Kolb, Marion Vernon, and Jean Barnett-Haeman.

Surviving are his loving wife of 56 years, Martha L. "Jane", nee Yount, Wood; a son, Brian (Kathy) Wood of Raleigh, N.C.; two daughters, Karen (Dennis) Bassimer of Shiloh, Ill., and Laura (Randy) Kohlenberger of Williamston, S.C.; six grandchildren, Amy (Jesse) Lowe, Michael Bassimer, Jarrett Wood, Alison, Seth, and Hannah Kohlenberger; a great-grandchild, Brooks Lowe; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation: Friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016, at the First Baptist Church in Dupo, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2016, at the First Baptist Church in Dupo with Pastor Roger Reid officiating. Interment will follow in Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, Ill.
