Verna M. Walker-Kosydor-Smith, 79, of Fairview Heights, Ill., born Nov. 25, 1936, in East St. Louis, Ill., died July 28, 2016, in deGreeff Hospice House in St. Louis, Mo.
Verna was a self-made accountant and tax preparer taking home correspondence courses and on the job training given by her wonderful employers throughout the years. She retired from Behlmann Pontiac GMC Trucks, Inc., in 1997. From 1997 to 2015 she was self-employed handling the monthly financial statements for Paul Behlmann of Behlmann Preowned Centers, Inc.
She married Leo Kosydor in 1954 and had two children Michael Kosydor Sr., and Vicki O'Brien. They divorced and he lives in Oconomowoc, Wis. She married James L. Smith in 1980.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lyman and Pearl, nee Johnston, Walker; her brothers, Edward, James (Evelyn), Raymond (Dorothy), Kenneth and Freeman (Evelyn) Walker; her brother-in-law, Gerald Barbee; her stepbrother, William Smith; and stepsisters, Jenny Holt and Margaret Ellis; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Shellie and Evelyn Smith; and her step-son-in-law Robert Schirmer.
Surviving are her husband of 36 years, James L. Smith; her first husband, Leo Kosydor; two children, Michael (Susan) Kosydor Sr., of Hernando, Miss., and Vicki O'Brien of Oconomowoc, Wis.; five grandchildren, Megan (Joe) Webster, Michael (Andrea) Kosydor Jr., John O'Brien (Alex), Shannon O'Brien and Kelli Kosydor; four great-grandchildren, Jase Webster, McKenna Webster, Jack O'Brien and Ella Rae Kosydor; a brother, Robert (Carol) Walker of Millstadt, Ill.; a sister, Evelyn Barbee of Fairview Heights, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, Louise Walker of Belleville, Ill., and Linda (Chuck) Harper of St. Louis, Mo.; three stepchildren, Patricia Schirmer, Randall Smith (Michael Schwartz) and Carolyn (Mike) Glazik; five step grandchildren, Katie (Mike) Biermann, Abby Schirmer, Jackie Schirmer, Brandon (Jenny) Glazik and Kyle Glazik; three step great-grandchildren, Bruce Glazik, Henry Biermann and Albert Biermann; and many dear nieces, nephews and cousins. Her family meant everything to her as well as all of her dear friends whom she loved and appreciated with all of her heart.

Visitation: Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, August 1, 2016, at Kassly Mortuary, Fairview Heights, Ill.
Funeral: A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 1, 2016, at Kassly Mortuary, Fairview Heights, Ill., with Rev. James Walker officiating. Interment will follow at Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, Ill.
