Msgr. Virgil Mank|
Monsignor Virgil W. Mank, born Dec. 25, 1939, in New Baden, Ill., died at 1 p.m. June 28, 2016, at Mount Carmel West Skilled Nursing Facility in O'Fallon, Mo., surrounded by his family.
Msgr. Mank was ordained a priest at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, Ill., by Bishop William A. O'Connor on May 22, 1965. His more than 50 years of priestly service in the diocese of Springfield began as associate pastor of St. Agnes Parish in Springfield (1965-1969) and St. Elizabeth Parish in Granite City (1969-1970). In 1970 he served five years as the chaplain of the Newman Community at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Ill. He returned as associate pastor to Ss. Peter & Paul Parish in Collinsville (1975-1977) and co-administrator at St. Mary, Taylorville, and at St. Rita in Kincaid (1977-1979). He was named pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption, St. Marie, and St. Valentine, The Bend (1979-1981). He served as pastor at S. Cecelia, Glen Carbon (1981-1988), St. Ambrose, Godfrey, (1988-2004) and pastor of St. Jerome, Troy, (2004-2009).
Msgr. Mank was appointed dean of the Alton Deanery in 1987 until his retirement in 2009. He served as parochial administrator of the Diocese from October 3rd to Dec. 19, 1999. On Feb. 19, 2002, he received the honor as chaplain to his Holiness (Monsignor) by St. John Paul II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William C. and Louise A., nee Weirich, Mank; a brother, Louis A. Mank; and two brothers-in-law, William Wadlow and Richard Gier.
Surviving are two sisters, Darlene Wadlow of Wentzville, Mo., and Mary Geir of Fenton, Mo.; three brothers, Billy (Connie) Mank of Godfrey, Ill., James (Lynne) Mank of Bethalto, Ill., and Timothy (Michelle) Mank of Waxhaw, N.C.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Visitation: Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 1, 2016, and from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2016, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 820 W. Homer Adams Parkway, Godfrey, Ill.
Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 2, 2016, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church with Father Steve Pohlman and Father Dan Bergbower officiating.
