Walter O. "Ozzie" Samoska, 91, of Maryville, Ill., born March 28, 1924, in West Frankfort, Ill., passed away at 10:05 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, 2016, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Ill.
Ozzie retired after over 35 years as a general foreman for the former B & O Railroad. He was a Navy veteran, and a member of Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Maryville, Ill. In his earlier years he enjoyed fast pitch softball, and later on golf was a passion of his as was gardening. Ozzie spent years taking care of his wife Bernice, and they were nominated Valentine King and Queen 2016 at Edwardsville Nursing and Rehab. He loved spending time with family and grandchildren, he always had a smile on his face and he will be dearly missed by all.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George J. and Eva, nee Lankutis, Samoska; a son, Wally Samoska; three brothers, John, Alban, and George Samoska; and a sister, Anne Babka.
Surviving are his wife, Bernice, nee Reiniger, Samoska whom he married on Oct. 22, 1949; two daughters, Victoria (Rick) Gurley of Maryville, ll., and Christine (Larry) Maggio of Maryville, Ill.; a son, Stanley (Deborah) Samoska of Glen Carbon, Ill.; six grandchildren, Amy (Kyle Sombke) Gurley of Monmouth, Ill., Jeffrey (Michelle) Samoska of Denver, Colo., Zach (fiancee, Logan Thiel) Maggio of Maryville, Ill., Taylor Maggio of Maryville, Ill., and Adam and Sarah Samoska of Glen Carbon, Ill.; two great-grandchildren, Jake and Luke; two sisters, Pauline Samoska and Bernice (Norman) Sackett both of Albuquerque, N.M.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15, 2016, at Barry Wilson Funeral Home in Maryville, Ill. Prayer service will be at 3 p.m. on Monday.
Funeral: Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, at Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Maryville, with Father Joseph Havrilka celebrant. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Fairview Heights, Ill., with navy military honors.
