Wilbert Stahl

Wilbert A. "Wib" Stahl, 97, of Smithton, Ill., born Jan. 16, 1919, in Prairie Du Long Township, Ill., died Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at Freeburg Care Center, Freeburg, Ill.

Mr. Stahl was a farmer for 13 years. After farming, Wib started working for the Smithton Lumber & Supply Company in 1956, and was a manager there for 30 years. He was a lifetime member of St. John United Church of Christ, the St. Clair County Farm Bureau, and Smithton Turner Society. Wib also was an avid fisherman and a coyote hunter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Sr. and Elizabeth, nee Skaer, Stahl; three brothers and their wives, Walter (Elvira) Stahl Jr., Edgar (Alice) Stahl, and Floyd (Ruth) Stahl; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Augustine and Jeanette Ohlendorf; and a grandson, Donald Stahl.

He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Melba, nee Schwaegel, Stahl, whom he married on Feb. 13, 1943, in Smithton, Ill.; a daughter, Joann (James) Bay of Belleville, Ill.; a son, Rick (Donna) Stahl of Smithton, Ill.; three grandchildren, Janine (Christopher) Parciak, of Belleville, Ill., Jeffrey (Diana) Bay of Belleville, Ill., and Ryan (Masae) Stahl of Okinawa, Japan; great-grandchildren, John and Kristen Parciak, Alexandra Curtis, and Natalee Brannaman; a brother-in-law, Marvin Ohlendorf of Belleville, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016, at St. John United Church of Christ, Smithton, Ill.

Funeral: A memorial service will be at 12 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, 2016, at the church with Rev. Dwayne Dollgener officiating. Burial will follow at Smithton City Cemetery, Smithton, Ill.
