William Wilmerding V

Retired U.S. Air Force Major William Edward "Bill" Wilmerding V, 95, of Asheville, N.C., passed away Sunday, June 12, 2016, at Flesher's Nursing Home, in Fairview, N.C.

Bill was born in Des Moines, Iowa, but called the Skyland/Asheville area of North Carolina his home. He lived many other places, including St. Louis, Mo., and Santa Fe, N.M. His military career took him to numerous parts of the U.S. and also to Japan. He lived in Asheville, N.C., for the last 35 years.

Bill graduated from Lee Edwards High School in Asheville, N.C. He left UNC Chapel Hill to join the Air Force immediately after Pearl Harbor, and served as a fighter and bomber pilot in the European Theater of Operations. He retired from the Air Force after 20 years as a Major with a Command Pilot rating. His post-military career was mostly civil service work, from which he retired as a planning officer at Scott Air Force Base, in Illinois. Bill was an avid golfer, having played golf into his nineties. He also loved traveling and hiking with his wife Terry, and they spent much time enjoying the beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William Edward Wilmerding IV and Sarah Farrow Wilmerding; his sister, Mary Athalinda Wilmerding, half-sister, Anne Caroline Wilmerding; and three sons, Craig Wilmerding, Bruce Wilmerding and William Joyner.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Theresa Norton Wilmerding; sons, Buck (Mickey) Wilmerding and Gary (Lois) Wilmerding; stepdaughter, Sherry Thorne; stepsons, Mike (Linda) Currier and Chuck (Denise) Currier; grandchildren, Michael (Monica) Thorne, Christopher Currier, Matthew Currier, Brian Wilmerding, and Jeffrey Wilmerding; and great-grandchildren, Mason Currier, Anais Thorne and Lucas Thorne.

The family would like to offer a special thanks to the staff of the Flesher's Fairview Nursing Home and Hospice for their compassionate and loving care of Bill in his final days.
