Henry Mahat

Henry J. Mahat, 79, of Collinsville, Ill., born March 30, 1934, in East St. Louis, Ill., passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014, in Edwardsville, Ill.

Mr. Mahat proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He graduated from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville with bachelor's in elementary education. He then completed his master's degree in public administration in 1963. Upon graduation he taught for Collinsville District 10 and followed that by spending a year with University City School District 10 in Missouri. In 1965, he became the principal for Red Bud School District 132; after which he accepted the position of superintendent with Smithton School District 130. He capped his career working in the Governor's Office of Interagency, as a state services coordinator, and the Illinois Department of Revenue. He was a parishioner with St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Collinsville, Ill., and devoted much time to the church especially as a "Wednesday Warrior". He also served as a fourth degree knight with the Knights of Columbus. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who will truly be missed by all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Josephine, nee Bernachek, Mahat; and a sister, Angela Vavra.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 54 years, Janet, nee Arnoldi, Mahat of Collinsville, Ill.; his children, Kerri (Mike) Castelli, Marc (Stacey) Mahat, and Trisha (Fred) Kaiser; his grandchildren, Kristi (Matt) Suarez, Michael (Lauren Williams) Castelli, Eric Castelli, Cole Mahat, Haley Mahat, Landon Mahat, Corryn Kaiser, and Ben Kaiser; his great-grandchildren, Kailey, Lana, Chloe, Mathew, and Sebastian; a niece, Sharon Ford; and many other relatives and friends.

Visitation: Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Collinsville, Ill.

Funeral: A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, in Collinsville, Ill., with Father John Beveridge officiating.

A celebration of life will be held from 2 to 6 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at Lake View Funeral Home, Fairview Heights, Ill. Interment will be held privately in Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, Ill.
