Maurice E. Hartlieb, 77, of Highland, Ill., born Sunday, Sept. 6, 1936, in Highland, Ill., died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Faith Countryside Homes/ Faith Care Center in Highland, Ill..
He was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ, Highland, Ill., Farm Heritage Museum, Greenville, Ill., and a teamster with Illinois Department of Transportation. He graduated from Breese High School, entered the US Navy, and served aboard the USS Bradford 545 in the Pacific. He worked 12 years for Highland Machine, farmed with his father, and later he and his wife ran small farms at Grantfork, Carlyle and Highland, Ill. In 1972, he began working for the State of Illinois Department of Transportation, from the IDOT-Bond County Facility (Greenville shed), and retired after 23 years. He also restored International tractors; enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing Pincochle and Euchre; and his pride and joy Yellow Labrador Retriever "Daisey".
He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville Henry and Louise Catherine, nee Woltering, Hartlieb; two sisters, Agnes Louise Knebel and Marie E. Reker; two brothers-in-law, Harold L. Reker and Raymond E. Knebel.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Irma M. Hartlieb, of Highland, Ill., whom he married on Thursday, Nov. 26, 1959; three sons, James W. "J. W." (Donna) Hartlieb of Highland, Ill., Russell J. (Laura) Hartlieb of Friendswood, Texas, and David D. (Leslie) Hartlieb of Indianapolis, Ind.; a daughter, Debra L. (Kevin) O'Connor of Groveland, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Stephanie M. (fiance-Alex Brito) Hartlieb of Midland, Texas, Jennifer L. (significant other-John Bischoff) Hartlieb of St. Louis, Mo., Samantha N. O'Connor of Groveland, Ill., Nathan W. O'Connor of Groveland, Ill., Kasey S. (Beth) Hartlieb of El Paso, Texas, Tyler R. Hartlieb of Friendswood, Texas, Mary G. Hartlieb of Beaumont, Texas, and Lauren A. Hartlieb of Indianapolis, Ind.; a great grandchild, Virginia A. Hartlieb of El Paso, Texas; a brother, Kenneth E. (Norma) Hartlieb of Pocahontas, Ill.
Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice or HACSM (Food Pantry).
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Highland, Ill.
Funeral: A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Highland, Ill., with Rev. Christopher W. Hill, Senior Pastor, officiating and Chaplain Mike Garrison, Heartland Hospice, co-officiating.
