Gregory Gasaway

Gregory J. Gasaway, 56, of Freeburg, Ill., formerly of Belleville, Ill., born Sept. 14, 1957, in East St. Louis, Ill., died suddenly Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Belleville, Ill.

A 1975 graduate of Althoff Catholic High School, Greg was a part of the Belleville, Ill., community for his entire life. He was the owner of Gasaway Insurance Agency in Belleville and contributed to the community in many ways, including frequent donations to the Interfaith Food Pantry, school supplies to local grade schools, and many others. He was an avid golfer, who thoroughly enjoyed sharing time with many friends on the golf course and a St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. Greg loved traveling to Florida, Mexico, or anywhere with a beach or a beautiful sunset. He was a great family man who held all of his family and friends very close to his heart.

Greg was preceded in death by his parents, James G. and Rose E., nee Meyer, Gasaway.

Surviving are his children, Jessica Gasaway of Belleville, Ill., and Ryan (Jackie, nee Hope) Gasaway of O'Fallon, Ill.; a brother, Edwin (Maria) Gasaway of San Diego, Calif.; three sisters, Kelly Alexander of Belleville, Ill., Mary Lynne (Andrew) Hill of San Antonio, Texas and Kerrie (Steven) Harter of Belleville, Ill.; five nieces and nephews, Kaitlynn Alexander (Steven Buettner), Joshua Gasaway, Madeline and Claire Harter, and Andrew "AJ" Hill; aunts and uncles; cousins; his loving friend, Mary; his goddaughter, Allie Boaz; and many dear friends, including Milo Jr. and Mary Hope, their children, Ellen Hope (Bo Lanter) and Maddie Hope, and Julie and Bo Murrey.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, and from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral procession will leave at 9:40 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, from the funeral home for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill., with Monsignor. William McGhee officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery, Belleville, Ill. In celebration of Greg's life, a gathering of friends and family will take place at Shenanigans Restaurant, Belleville, Ill., following the burial.
