Rita Thompson

Rita M. Thompson, nee South, 91, of Belleville, Ill., born Saturday, Oct. 14, 1922, in Palmyra, Mo., died Friday, April 18, 2014, at her daughter's home in Pacific, Mo.

Rita was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Belleville, Ill., and the social justice and fish fry committees at the church. She volunteered at St. Elizabeth's Hospital and read for the blind. Rita enjoyed playing the piano, painting, knitting, reading her mysteries and doing crossword puzzles. She also was an excellent cook and her frosted salad has become an internationally acclaimed recipe.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mayme, nee Daume, South; brothers, Henry South, William South and Thomas South; and her sister, Drucilla Fleming.

Surviving are her husband, Tommy Thompson; children, Meg Kennedy of Kapolei, Hawaii, Richard W. Thompson of Belleville, Ill., Kathleen (Mark) Mackey of Maryville, Ill., Barbara (David) Euler of Pacific, Mo., Michael Thompson of Shawnee, Okla., Maureen (Ed Billings) Kauten of St. Louis, Mo., Stephen Thompson of Montana, Christopher (Mary) Thompson of St. Paul, Minn., and Connie O'Saben of Swansea, Ill.; grandchildren, Bill Kennedy, Brittany (Steve) Berry, Nicholas Kauten, Eric O'Saben, Christopher Kauten, Ryan Thompson, Meg Thompson, Ann Thompson and Peter Thompson; and great-grandchildren, Piper and Hurley Kennedy and Maxwell and Emma Kauten.

Rita was very musically inclined and loved listening to the Allegro Chorale which includes three of her children Richard, Connie and Maureen.

Funeral: A funeral procession will leave from Kurrus Funeral Home in Belleville, Ill., at 12:45 p.m., Saturday, April 26, 2014, for a 1 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady Queen of Peace in Belleville, Ill., with Father Stan Konieczny officiating. Interment will follow at Valhalla Gardens of Memory Mausoleum, Belleville, Ill.
