Mark J. Deschaine, 58, of Belleville, Ill., born Feb. 27, 1956, in Plainwell, Mich., died Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, Ill.
Mr. Deschaine was the founder, president, and chief investment officer of Deschaine & Company, an investment advisory firm in Belleville, Ill. Raised in Kalamazoo, Mich., Mark earned a bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University and an MBA from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. He began his career as a trust investment officer with Lumberman's Bank in Muskegon, Mich., served as assistant vice-president in the trust department of Boatmen's Bank (now Bank of America), Belleville, Ill., and later became CEO, president, and chief investment officer of Investment Counselors Incorporated, a St. Louis-based institutional investment advisor. He established his own firm, Deschaine & Company in Belleville, Ill., in 1997.
Mr. Deschaine was active in his community, serving as a board member and officer of the Southwestern Illinois Development Authority (SWIDA), a board member of the SIU-E Foundation, and a board member of the Eastern Missouri chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. He was a member, board member, and officer of St. Clair Country Club and served as president of the Powder Mill Woods Homeowners Association.
He was a finalist for the Ernst & Young-Merrill Lynch Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 1993, served as a faculty member for the American Institute of Banking, and was a classroom consultant for Junior Achievement, Project Business. Mark was a member of the Investment Counsel Association of America, the St. Louis Regional Commerce and Growth Association, and the Association of Investment Management Sales Executives. He was also the author of a book entitled Views on Investing, printed by Infinity Publishing in 2011.
Mr. Deschaine was preceded in death by his parents, Francis J. and Betty L., nee Campbell, Deschaine.
Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Marnie E., nee Riffel, Deschaine, whom he married on March 18, 1994; two daughters, Reagan L. Deschaine and Rachel C. Deschaine; five sisters and three brothers, Corinne Galles, Anne (Gil) Naru, Frank Deschaine, Pat (Kirk) Breitels, Joan Copeland, Joe Deschaine, Cathy (Rich) Campbell, and John (Karen) Deschaine; many nieces and nephews; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Terry and Joan Riffel; and other extended family members.
Mark's family would like to offer special thanks to the warm and compassionate doctors and nurses at both Memorial Hospital and Hospice of Southern Illinois.
