Dallas Harvey

Dallas Harvey, 95, of Highland, Ill., born March 8, 1919, in Schneider, Ind., passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014, at Faith Care Center, Highland, Ill.

Mr. Harvey was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Highland, Ill. He was also a member of the VFW, American Legion, Military Officers of America Association, Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Associate Staff for Campus Crusade for Christ Military Ministry.

Dallas joined the Navy in 1937. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and as a Pearl Harbor Survivor, he said, "I saw the first bomb drop." He served with the Navy and Marine Corps during World War II as a Corpman. He was one of the first 40 officers chosen to command the Naval Medical Service Corps and retired in 1967 after 30 years. In retirement, he was one of three primaries who established the Military Ministry for Campus Crusade for Christ, which impacted military families' lives for another 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Earl and Cora E., nee Worcester, Harvey; a daughter, Sharla Harvey; and brothers and sisters.

Surviving are his wife, Rita Mae, nee Drake, Harvey of Highland, Ill., whom he married on July 7, 1947, in Great Lakes, Ill.; two sons, Steve (Debbie) Harvey of Detroit, Mich., and Ed (Sylvia) Harvey of Highland, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and family friend, Kate Broadhurst.

Memorials may be made to the Central Illinois Honor Flight.

Visitation: Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Meridith Funeral Home, Highland, Ill.

Funeral: Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2014, at Meridith Funeral Home, Highland, Ill., with Rev. Leonard Pye officiating. Interment will be at Greene Cemetery, Millersburg, Ill.
