Vinita Carter

Vinita Nadine Carter, 89, of Bloomington, Ill., formerly of Fairview Heights, Ill., born July 31, 1924 in Murphysboro, Ill., died peacefully Thursday, May 29, 2014, at Martin Health Center, Bloomington, Ill., surrounded by her two children and family.

Vinita was raised in Centralia where she married her high school sweetheart, Bob Carter on January 3, 1942. During World War II, she volunteered at hospitals while Bob served overseas in the Navy. She then worked at Emerson Electric and Scott Air Force Base until she earned her teaching degree from SUI-E. She taught elementary school in Cahokia until her retirement in 1985.

She and Bob enjoyed camping and fishing at Little Grassy Lake in southern Illinois and traveling and camping across the country with family and friends. They also served their church, First Presbyterian Church, Belleville, Ill., in leadership positions and with many mission trips. They spent many winters in Texas where they enjoyed golf and square dancing. She was an accomplished quilter and created many items that are now cherished heirlooms. The past few years she was a fan at many basketball games cheering on her two great-granddaughters. While in Bloomington, Ill., Vinita was a member of Second Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Carter; her mother, Ida Mae, nee Newman, Eller; and stepfather, Charles Eller.

Surviving are her children, Vicki (Greg) Freeman of Normal, Ill., and Bob (Margaret) Carter of Fairview Heights, Ill.; grandsons, Matt (Tracy) Freeman of Normal, Ill., David (Candice) Freeman, Mahomet, Ill., Richard (Samantha) Carter of Pardeeville, Wisc.; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation: Friends may call from 10 to11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Kurrus Funeral Home in Belleville, Ill.

Funeral: Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Kurrus Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill., with the Rev. Blythe Kieffer officiating. Cremation was held by her request and interment will be held in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Sandoval, Ill.
