John Shaffer

Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. John C. Shaffer, 63, of St. Elmo, Ill., born Nov. 29, 1950, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, Mo.

A veteran of Desert Storm, Lt. Col. Shaffer retired after serving 32 years in the U.S. Army. He then worked with TRANSCOM at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. John was a good husband, dad, son, brother, and friend. He was everyone's favorite uncle.

He was preceded in death by his father, Elwood Shaffer.

Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Beverly A., nee Harris, Shaffer, whom he married on Dec. 5, 1976; a daughter, Katie Shaffer (fiance, Ryan Allen); a son, Steve C. Shaffer; his mother, Lorene, nee McKeel, Shaffer of Taylorsville, Utah; three brothers, Don (Val) Shaffer, Bob Shaffer, and Bill (Kim) Shaffer; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill., and from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 10, 2014, at St. Peter's Cathedral Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Funeral: A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 10, 2014, at St. Peter's Cathedral, Belleville, Ill., with Msgr. John Myler officiating. Burial with military honors will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
