Athalien Melvin

Athalien V. "Al" Melvin, nee Lewis, born July 29, 1923, in Dieterich, Ill., passed away Sunday, July 6, 2014, just short of 91 years of age.

Athalien was an active member of the community her entire life. In her early 20s during World War II, she worked in civil service where she met her husband Malachi after he had completed his military service in Germany. She worked for many years in women's and children's retail, did a stint in real estate, and later worked in the video movie rental industry.

Her final profession was with Southwestern Illinois College PSOP (Programs & Service for Older Persons), where she worked part-time until 85 years of age.

For more than 25 years, Athalien lived in Freeburg, Ill., where she and Malachi raised their children. She later lived in Belleville and Swansea, Ill. She was blessed with many friends and enjoyed a long, rich and full life.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Malachi E. Melvin, whom she married Nov. 1, 1946, and who died May 18, 1982; and her parents, Alfred and Noral Nadine, nee Carter, Lewis. The eldest of five children, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Illa Montague; and two brothers, Melvin Lewis and Delbert Lewis.

Surviving are her son, Mark E. Melvin and his wife, Stephanie J. Melvin; her daughter, Lisa Bezzole and her husband, Dominic D. Bezzole; her brother, Don Lewis of Ivesdale, Ill.; and 19 nieces and nephews.

Funeral: Following cremation, a private memorial service will be held with interment at Green Mount Protestant Cemetery, Belleville, Ill.
