Emmett P. Matthews, 93, of Galion, born March 22, 1921, in Chicago, Ill., died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at Galion Community Hospital.
Emmett served with the United States Army during World War II and was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Galion, Ohio. He was a life member of AMVETS Post 1979 where he had served as Finance Officer, a member of the American Legion Scarbrough Post 243, Moose Lodge 303 and VFW 4329, all in Galion, Ohio. He volunteered for many years for A Special Wish Foundation, Galion Chapter, and enjoyed camping and dancing. He retired from TRANSCO Railway Products in Bucyrus, and prior to that he worked at CONRAIL as a traveling inspector.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine, nee Ehrmann, Matthews, on Nov. 4, 1982; parents, Leo and Maude, nee Prentice, Matthews; a daughter, Karen Raymer; and a stepson, Thomas Blackford.
Surviving are his wife, Verna Mae, nee Deisch, Blackford Matthews, whom he married Aug. 17, 1989; a son, Prentice (Susan) Matthews of Millstadt, Ill.; two daughters, Frances (Tom) Pfalzgraf of Collinsville, Ill., and Kathy (Fred) Wagar of Carleton, Mich.; stepchildren Carol (Steve) Miley of Galion, Ohio, and Dennis (Kimberly) Blackford of Galion, Ohio; 11 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a half-brother and a half-sister.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, at the funeral home with Pastor Richard Genzman officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery in Collinsville, Ill. Full military honors will be held by the U.S. Army and Galion/Crestline Veterans military funeral detail will follow the service.
A Graveside Service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, 2014 at St. John Cemetery, Collinsville, Ill., with the Rev. Danny Cox officiating.
