George C. Hayes, 86, of New Athens, Ill., born Dec. 5, 1926, in Qulin, Mo., passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at his home with his loving family by his side.
Mr. Hayes was a farmer and a member of St. John United Church of Christ in New Athens, Ill. He also proudly and honorably served his country in the U.S. Army towards the end of World War II and also during the Korean War. George belonged to several organizations during his lifetime including the New Athens Lions Club; Masonic Lodge; St. Clair County Farm Bureau and had served on the board of directors of the Lenzburg Farmers Co-Op. He was also a member of the Teamsters.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip and Belvia, nee McIver, Hayes; and his loving wife Virginia, nee Thomas, Hayes, whom he married on May 11, 1946 in Poplar Bluff, Mo., and who passed away on Dec. 13, 2011.
Surviving are his two daughters, Diane (William) Lacey of St. Louis, Mo., and Mary Limauro of Andover, Mass.; three grandchildren, Kelly (James) Edwards of Webster Groves, Mo., Capt. John (Brittany) Limauro of Fort Carson, Colo., and Mark Limauro of Andover, Mass.; three great-grandchildren, Abigail, Hayley and James Jr.; and one brother, Billy Mac Hayes of Doniphan, Mo.

Visitation: Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 10, 2013, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, March 11, 2013, at St. John United Church of Christ in New Athens, Ill.
Funeral: Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 11, 2013, at the church with the Rev. Dr. Robert Koch officiating. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery, New Athens, Ill.
