Retired USMC Gunnery Sgt. John Richard Brown, 75, of Freeburg, Ill., born Jan. 24, 1938, in Charleston, Ill., died Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Belleville, Ill.
Since his retirement from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1976, John and his wife, LuLu have owned and operated Valentine's Restaurant in Freeburg, Ill. John and Lulu just celebrated 50 years of marriage in September 2013. John was a member of Freeburg Masonic Lodge 418 and a life member of VFW Freeburg Post 7074.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilson and Florence, nee Knupp, Brown; and a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Jim Siemens.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Silulu, nee Savea, Brown; a daughter and a son, Lani (Dan) Parker and Robert W. Brown, both of Freeburg, Ill.; four grandchildren, Robert R. Brown, Irene M.S. Brown, Van Brown and Maximilian Brown; his brother, Larry D. (Doris) Brown of Freeburg, Ill.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Esera and Mary Ah-San; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation: A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at Valentine's Restaurant beginning at 4 p.m. All friends of John and the family are welcome to stop in and reminisce and toast John's life.
Funeral: Private family funeral services will be held followed by burial at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo., at a later date.
