Donald Gunter Sr.

Donald L. Gunter Sr., 80, of Highland, Ill., born July 10, 1933, in Cape Girardeau, Mo., died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at Alhambra Care Center in Alhambra, Ill.

Mr. Gunter was a member of Family Bible Church. He was also a member of ICWUC International Union, a 3rd Degree Mason and a Shriner. Donald graduated from High School in Carmi, Ill. He then entered the US Navy during the Korean War. After the war he attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Ill., and studied zoology. He and his wife and family moved to East St. Louis, Ill., and he was employed with American Zink. He later worked for Ethyl Corporation and retired after 27 years. He moved to Highland in 1970. In retirement, he and his wife visited St. Petersburg, Fla., annually. Donald loved his family, loved to travel, and liked playing golf, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie L., nee Stuby, Gunter, whom he married on June 9, 1957, and who died on March 21, 2006; parents, Harry O. and Della, nee Boyce, Gunter; brothers, Charles O. Gunter, Paul Gunter, Earl Gunter and Lewis E. Gunter; and a sister, Dora Estes.

Surviving are his sons, Donald L. (Alisa) Gunter Jr., of Highland, Ill., and Stan B. (Margaret) Gunter of Springfield, Ill.; daughters, Sonya D. (Wesley) Norris-Robinson of Arnold, Mo., and Regina L. (Robert) Jackowski of Highland, Ill.; grandchildren. Donny (Jill) Gunter III, Lindsay Gunter, Michael Gunter, David Gunter, Jacob Gunter, Allison Norris, Kayla Norris, Joseph Norris, Nicholas Norris, R.J. Jackowski and Josh Jackowski; great-grandchildren, Landon Gunter, Luke Gunter and Rylie Gunter; brother, Billy G. (Nancy) Gunter of Tampa, Fla.; sister, Marjorie Saxe of California; sister-in-law, Teresa Gunter of St. Louis, Mo.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, and from 8 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, Ill.,

Funeral: Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, Ill., with Pastor Bill Dempsey officiating. Interment with full military honors provided by Highland VFW and American Legion Posts will be at Highland City Cemetery in Highland, Ill.,
