Carl Graham

Carl H. Graham, 89, of Granite City, Ill., born on Dec. 12, 1924, in Jasper, Tenn., passed away on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at Eden Village in Glen Carbon, Ill., with his family by his side.

Mr. Graham gave 44 years to Granite City Steel as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement. The Army veteran proudly served his country during World War II, earning a Bronze Star for serving in the southern Philippines, an Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon, an American Theatre Campaign Ribbon, a Victory Ribbon and a Good Conduct Medal.

Carl had attended St. Peter Evangelical United Church of Christ in Granite City, Ill., was a former member of the Madison County Farm Bureau, former member of the Operating Engineers Union. Carl had a very kind heart, always helping others and considering the needs of others before his own. In his free time he enjoyed going to auctions, yard work, farming and doing anything outside. He shared a special love with his grandchildren whom he adored. His grandkids adored him, affectionately calling him "Pop." He will be remembered for his kind and helping ways to others and especially towards his family where he shared many cherished moments together.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lela, nee Phillips, Graham; his brothers; Paul Graham, Joseph "Jack" Graham and Fred Graham; sisters, Marie Myers, Dorothy Hegger and Elizabeth Nolting.

Surviving are his loving wife, Josephine "Jo," nee Malench, Graham, whom he married on Nov. 19, 1965; daughters, Carla (Michael) Knott of Collinsville, Ill., and Cherie (Mike) Kuhn of New Douglas, Ill.; the delights of his life, his grandchildren, Evan Knott and Ava Knott of Collinsville, Ill.

Memorials are suggested to St. Peter Evangelical United Church of Christ, 2101 Cleveland Blvd, Granite City, Ill., or the donor's choice

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, Ill.

Funeral: In celebration of his life, services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Aaron Ban officiating. Burial will follow with military rites at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon, Ill.
