Elsie Winter

Elsie Marie Winter, nee Kosar, 91, of Belleville, Ill., born May 30, 1922, in Belleville, Ill., died Thursday, March 6, 2014, at the Fountains of Shiloh, Shiloh, Ill.

Elsie started her working life at the family grocery store, Eddie's Market in Belleville, and then was employed at a local bank. In her youth, she was a member of the very first VFW Post 1739 Drum & Bugle Corps. She later worked as a hostess at the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows Restaurant for 25 years, retiring in 2000. Anyone who came through the restaurant would remember her. She inspired everyone with her grace, spirit, and wonderful sense of humor.

Mrs. Winter was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill. Her family, including her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, were the most important part of her life. She enjoyed crocheting, playing bingo, and the many friendships she had made over the years.

Elsie was preceded in death by her former husband, H. "Coy" Winter; her parents, Joseph and Mary, nee Dolansky, Kosar; two sisters, Emily Jakes and Lillian Murdoch; and three brothers, Ollie Kosar, Kenneth Kosar, and Joseph Kosar, in childhood.

Surviving are four daughters and two sons, Linda (Butch) Dohrman of Belleville, Ill., Thom (Amy) Winter of Poway, Calif., Judy Winter of Belleville, Ill., Kathy (Rob) Anderson of Belleville, Ill., John (Michelle) Winter of San Diego, Calif., and Mary (Mike) Blaies of Freeburg, Ill.; 13 grandchildren, Megan (Clay) Bertelsman, Rebecca (John Weiler) Dohrman, Tony Dohrman, Tannan (Whitney) Winter, Tali (Danny) Vaughn, Rob Jr. (Kelli) Anderson, Tiffany Anderson, Amanda Anderson, John Henry Winter, Dayna Winter, Jennifer (Kurt) Westerfield, Brad Blaies, and Danny Blaies; 12 great-grandchildren, Allison, Jack, Noah, Ella, Bohden, Wren, Greysen, Cora, Caleb, Robby III, Madison, and Keaton; a sister-in-law, Loretta Kosar of Bonne Terre, Mo.; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; and cousins.

Funeral: Funeral procession will leave at 9:40 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, from the funeral home for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Belleville, Ill., with Msgr. William McGhee and Father George Mauck concelebrating. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Belleville, Ill.
