Newman Stafford

Newman Lawrence Stafford, 84, of Granite City, Ill., born Sept. 15, 1929, in Dover, Tenn., passed away Friday, March 21, 2014, at Christian North East Hospital in St. Louis with his family by his side.

Mr. Stafford was a meat cutter representing Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union for over 30 years working for Kroger and Shop N' Save. The United States Army veteran proudly served his country during the Korean War, serving in Germany. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Granite City where he was a royal ambassador and youth director. He was a strong supporter of the Institute for the Deaf in St. Louis and in his free time enjoyed traveling to all 50 states, camping, water skiing, snow skiing and spending time with his family and friends. He will be remembered for his kind heart to all and the many special times he shared with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, "Trudy" Gertrude Irene, nee Mezger, Stafford; son, Jeffrey Scott Stafford; parents, Lawrence and Kate, nee Emery, Stafford; brothers, Harvey and (Lucille) Stafford, Porter and (Nadine) Stafford, Hilton Thomas and (Alene) Stafford, Chester and (Rebecca) Stafford, Norman Stafford; sister, Lucille and (Leonard) Harris; and brother-in-law, Charles Lupardus.

He is survived by and will be missed by his sons, Chaplain Gregory Lynn Stafford of Taylorville, Ill., Timothy Allan Stafford of Granite City, and Bobby Joe (Jill) Ketcherside of Granite City; granddaughters, Bobbi (David) Ward of Wood River, Krystle Hoisington-Ketcherside of Washington; grandson, Aaron Roberts; great-grandchildren, Austin, Jordan and Maci Ward; sisters, Emma (Norman) Hessler of Glen Carbon, Carrie Lupardus of Granite City; special grandson, Calyx; special friend, Janice Stiverson of Granite City; and a special uncle to all his nieces and nephews.

Memorials are suggested in honor of his oldest son Jeffrey Scott Stafford to the Central Institute for the Deaf, 825 South Taylor Ave., St. Louis, Mo. 63110.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2014, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, Ill., and 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, March 24, 2014, at Calvary Baptist Church, 3000 Washington Ave. in Granite City, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 24, 2014, at Calvary Baptist Church with Chaplain Gregory Lynn Stafford officiating. Burial will follow with military rites at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon, Ill.
