Ronnie Burton

Ronnie A. Burton, 70, of Granite City, Ill., born Sept. 19, 1943, in Miner Switch, Mo., passed away at 12:10 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2014, at his home.

Mr. Burton retired as Chief Operating Engineer from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, Ill., after 20 years of dedicated service and had worked many years at Granite City Steel. The United States Navy veteran proudly served his country during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a proud man and was dedicated to his family, always there to watch or coach his children through their years of sports and also dedicated to his community and stood up for his beliefs, running as a trustee for Pontoon Beach. He enjoyed his days of golfing or eating with his Breakfast Club, caring for his wife, children and grandchildren, woodworking, telling a joke or coaching many children in the community. He was a jack of all trades, always working on something and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He will be remembered for his loving and jovial personality and for the many special times shared with his family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Robert A. Burton and Nadine, nee Skaggs, Summers; his stepfather, Paul Summers; and his grandmother, Viola Skaggs.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Shirley, nee Phillips, Burton, whom he married Feb. 3, 1968, in Cahokia, Ill.; two children, Kelly (fianc‚, Michael Birk) Burton of Collinsville, Ill., and Kory (Sherri) Burton of Glenview, Ill.; three grandchildren, Blake Johnson, Emily Johnson and Jack Burton; stepbrother, Dan (Karen) Summers of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two aunts, Margaret Wurmnest of Deer Creek, Ill., and Ginger Harshberger of Collinsville, Ill.; mother-in-law, Delpha Phillips of Granite City, Ill.; many special cousins; nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City, Ill., with Rev. Larry Deutschman and Rev. Josh Phillips officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates, Glen Carbon, Ill.
