Maurice W. Cowan, 89, of Wood River, Ill., formerly of Granite City, Ill., born Sept. 26, 1924, in Granite City, Ill., passed away Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at Rosewood Care Center in Alton, Ill.
Mr. Cowan gave over 37 years at Tri City Grocery working in the warehouse. He retired from the Granite City School District as a custodian. The Army veteran proudly served his country during World War II and was a 65 year member of the Granite City VFW and the DAV. In his free time Maurice enjoyed playing cards, trivia and watching sports. Maurice will be remembered for his kind and loving heart and the many special times he shared with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred F., nee Beljanski, Cowan, whom he married on Aug. 23, 1947; parents, Raymond H. and Margaret M., nee Stuart, Cowan; brothers, Stuart, Kenneth, Sherwood and Robert; and sisters, Marian Grace and Doris Seibold.
Surviving are his daughter, Karen Campbell of Wood River, Ill.; sister, Shirley Lawless of O'Fallon, Mo.; grandchildren, Christopher (Rachael) Campbell of South Roxana, Ill., Carla (Brad) Klaustermeier of Wood River, Ill., and Kimberly Campbell of Wood River, Ill.; great-grandchildren, Taylor Campbell, Kyle Campbell and Andrew Campbell; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Rosewood Care Center in Alton, BJC Hospice and Alton Memorial Hospital for their kind and loving care.

Visitation: Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2014, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, Ill.
Funeral: In celebration of his life services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the funeral home. Burial will follow with military rites at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon, Ill.
