Art Capelle

Art D. Capelle, 80, of Troy, Ill., born June 26, 1933, in Troy, Ill., died Sunday, June 15, 2014, at his residence.

Art was born at the family home and reared in Troy, Ill. He graduated from McCray-Dewey High School, Troy, Ill., in 1951. He served with the U.S

Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean Conflict. He worked at the Commonwealth-Edison and Shell Oil Refinery, as an Insulator; later he worked from Local 1, St. Louis, Mo. He retired in 1994. He coached his sons in baseball; and played baseball for the Troy Red Birds. He was a faithful follower of the St. Louis Cardinal baseball team. He truly did enjoy his grandchildren. He enjoyed cutting firewood. He especially enjoyed the fellowship of family and friends. Our lives are richer because he shared his life so fully. He will always be with us in spirit. As people were leaving, he always told them, "Give Me A Smile".

Art was a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church in Troy, Ill.; the Knights of Columbus, Council 9266, Troy, Ill. (Past Grand Knight and charter member); Knights of Columbus, Fourth Degree Assembly Council 3442 in Troy, Ill.; 2002 Illinois Knights of Columbus Hall of Fame; Insulators Local 56 in Wood River, Ill., working from Local 1, St. Louis, Mo.; and a former member of the American Legion Post 708, Troy, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Martin Capelle Sr., on July 2, 1947, and Ethel Mary, nee Arth, Capelle, on Oct. 18, 1997; a brother, Paul M. Capelle, on Jan. 9, 2014; father and mother-in-law, Gus and Linda, nee Phillips, Liening; six brothers-in-law, George Nemon, Charles Hanks, Robert Herzberg, Harold "Power House" Liening, Gene Liening, and Leonard Liening.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy A., nee Liening, Capelle of Troy, Ill.; two sons, Rick L. (Karen) Capelle of Morton, Ill., and Rodney M. Capelle of Troy, Ill.; two daughters, Lisa J. (James) Krotz of Troy, Ill., and Laurie A. (Tommy) Eilers of Troy, Ill.; nine grandchildren, Amie J. (Brent) Beckwith of Moro, Ill., Jason P. (Jamie) Capelle of Indianspolis, Ind., Heather L. (Joe) Walter of East Peoria, Ill., Jena M. (Jake) Hewitt of Troy, Ill., Erin L. (Kevin) Wassell of Troy, Ill., Chelsea N. Spengel of Troy, Ill., T.J. Eilers of Troy, Ill., Zac A. Capelle of Morton, Ill., and Taylor L. Capelle of Troy, Ill.; four great-grandchildren, Emma S. Williams of Troy, Ill., Jaxton R. Hewitt of Troy, Ill., Mariska A. Walter of East Peoria, Ill., and Sloan A. Capelle of Indianapolis, Ind.; two sisters, Mary L. Nemon of Crossville, Tenn., and Mae Meta Hanks of Troy, Ill.; four sisters-in-law, Marjorie Capelle of Highland, Ill., Doris Liening of Highland, Ill., Mary Herzberg of Highland, Ill., and Pat Liening of Highland, Ill.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2014, and from 8 to 10 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2014, at St. Jerome Catholic Church, Troy, Ill.

Funeral: A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 19, 2014, at the church, with Father Pat G. Jakel of St. Jerome Church in Troy officiating. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Troy, Ill.
