Alvena "Alvie" Barnes was born in Mount Claire, NB, moved to Westmont, IL during the dust bowl years, and lived the majority of her life in California, where she met her husband Arthur. She and Arthur moved to Bellingham in 1999. Alvena worked as an Executive Secretary, volunteered at Palm Drive Hospital in Sebastopol, CA, was active in "Bookies" book club and played dominoes with friends in Bellingham. She never knew a stranger and always approached life as the "glass half full". She is survived by her husband, Arthur, of almost 65 years. Her daughter Jerilyn Johansen, son-in-law, Bo Johansen, grandson, Cole of Bellingham, and a multitude of extended family and friends, whom she loved dearly. A celebration of her life is pending. Donations can be made to Whatcom Hospice House in her name.
