Annie Jane DeJong, 90, passed away on Monday, April 25, 2016. Annie was born December 24, 1925 in Grand Rapids, Michigan to John and Louise Vander Molen and at 6 months old, her parents moved to Whatcom County, with her in a dresser drawer in the back seat of the car. At the age of 14, Annie accepted the Lord as her personal Savior. She graduated from Lynden Christian and Bellingham Beauty Schools. Ann married Sam DeJong in 1944. She worked as a hairdresser for a time and in 1951 she entered a contest with the Lynden Tribune and the Sumas News, selling subscriptions and won a car. After starting a family, she continued to do hair at home; also taking in babysitting. She and Sam had seven children: Irwin (Linda) DeJong, Donna (Gerrit) VanWeerdhuizen, Diana (Jim) Zwiers, Ardi (Dave) DeWaard, Louise (Harold) Heeringa, Marlen (Sherry) DeJong, and Lynnette (Mike) Menchaca. She had 24 grandchildren and 42 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Maxine Vander Molen, Leota Vander Molen and Stella Som and brother in law Harold Van Winkle. After the kids were all grown, she went back to beauty school for a refresher course and Sam and she bought a home near Wiser Lake, where she had her very own beauty shop. Sam and Ann were members of the First Christian Reformed Church. Every Sunday after church, Ann served soup, sandwiches and ice cream to the kids and grandkids. After moving to Meadow Greens in 2005, the tradition continued only it became coffee and goodies. Mom loved to bake and we always loved her homemade cinnamon rolls and cookies. She liked to go for Sunday drives, enjoyed reading, but crocheting was her favorite pastime. She made quilts and crocheted afghans for each of her grandchildren. Preceding her were her loving husband Sam; granddaughter MicaelLei Erinn Menchaca; parents; sisters Sadie Vander Molen and Sue Van Winkle; brothers Donald, John, Cecil, and Pete Vander Molen; A big thank you to Meadow Greens, Christian Health Care Center and Hospice for the special care they gave our mother.
