Bert Kale Obituary

Bert Charles Kale, age 96, of Bellingham, passed away peacefully on March 19,2010, at home surrounded by family. He was born April 27, 1913 in Everson, WA; the middle son of Albert and Lily May (Eggert) Kale. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Earl and Glen, and his wife of 59 years, Opal. Bert will be greatly missed by his children, Charles Kale and Karolyn Merriman (husband Tim); four grandchildren, Randle Carr (wife Amie) of Bellingham, Tamara Kale of Seattle, Amy Finkbonner of Bellingham, and Emily Diaz (husband Joel) of Bow. Other survivors include three great-granddaughters, Lauren, Maren and Addison Carr; niece Sandra Gischer; nephews John Olbrantz, Ed Kale, Bruce Kale, Earl Kale, Jr., Gaines Kale, and Daniel Kale; numerous cousins and in-laws; and close family friend Karen Christenson. A resident of Whatcom County, Bert graduated from Mt. Baker High School. He married Opal Hill on January 10, 1942, and was a devoted husband and father. He was Opal's loving and sole caregiver for many years prior to her death in 2001. He served in the U. S. Army from 1942 to 1944 as an attorney in the Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps. Bert earned his law degree from the University of Washington School of Law; and in 1939 he began his legal practice in Bellingham. Bert served as Justice of the Peace, and District Court Judge, before serving as a Whatcom County Superior Court Judge from 1951 until his retirement in 1972. In addition, he served as a Judge Pro Tem on the Washington State Supreme Court. Bert was honored by the D.A.R., Daughters of the American Revolution, as the first recipient in this area of the "Distinguished Valor Award for Exemplary Citizenship." Bert was the former President of the Board of Directors of the C. S. Kale Canning Company. He loved to golf, and was a long-time member of the Bellingham Golf and Country Club. He and Opal loved to travel, and took numerous trips around the country in their motor home. He was a remarkable man of integrity, patience, even temper, and humor. His family is hard pressed to recall a time when he was either angry or even upset. Bert loved God, and had a quiet faith. He was generous with his time and finances, and he was a member and former trustee of Marietta Community Church. At Bert's request no services will be held. His family plans to host a celebration of his life this summer. Memorial contributions may be made in Bert's name to Whatcom Hospice Foundation, 800 E. Chestnut, Suite 1-C, Bellingham, WA 98225. Dear Chuck, Karolyn, and all of the family, I am so sorry that I didn't get by to see your Dad before he passed away. It just seems that when I do get to B'ham I am only there a day or so and then I'm rushing back home.Your Mom and Dad were very dear to me. .I guess I always thought of your Dad as the strong quiet one but that is just because your Mom and I were always catching up on things.I always felt welcome in your home and they were both very unusual as they never treated young people as "just kids". They talked to you and encouraged you and valued your opinion. I especially appreciated that they encouraged me in my education.(that was you, Chuck helping me with UICSM) Boy was I glad to get out of that class. They never once said, Trudy, why don't you figure it out yourself. I did talk your Dad on the phone a couple of years ago and kept saying to myself that maybe this trip up I would be able to stop by. Well, I'm a little late. It was wonderful that he was able to get to know all of the grandchildren and great grandchildren. I'm sure he will be missed by all. Our sincere sympathy to all.Trudy and Dick Ecker Sequim,WA

Bert and Opal were two of my favorite people. My friends and I came to the antique shop every weekend that Opal was open. She would educate all of us and always sell us something precious. Bert always came in to visit and see how everyone was doing. Sometimes he would take us out to his shop to see his latest project or he would repair something that we had brought with us. He was such a fabulous, friendly, giving and caring person.

After Opal's passing, Bert gave me the Antique sign that was at the end of the driveway. I felt very honored. He said he knew how much I loved Opal and my visits with her.

My friend and I also had the opportunity to golf with Bert on the 9 hole course in Everson (all I could handle.) Since I hadn't golfed for 25 years my "game" was significantly impaired but Bert was always encouraging and so humble for such an excellent golfer...the yardage he got out of that soft, short swing boggled my mind. He often had some new club to show us or suggest we borrow it to give it a try. Additionally, Bert kept us loaded with golf balls from his egg carton collection. He was always so generous.

Bert Kale was a great man, very proud of his family, and truly a gift from God. I hope you all find peace in your memories. I feel blessed to have known both Bert and Opal.

This is Amy (one of the grandkids). I just want to say thanks to those who have written in this guest book. I love to hear from you who knew him in other "seasons" of his life. I/we are begrudgingly respecting his wish for no memorial...but I know I speak for other family members who find these posts comforting – so thanks for posting ‘em!

Chuck and Karolyn, I was saddened to read that your Dad passed away. How I remember the good times your family and mine had at Birch Bay for all those year..swimming,clamming,crabbing and the barbeques. Your Dad will be missed by many. How wonderful that you had him as part of your lives for so long.

Bert Kale was an absolutely wonderful man. When I served as a Judge I always told Judge Kale that I wanted to be exactly like him. As a Judge, he was firm, yet fair. One time in 1992, he stuck his head in my office and said, "I was a judge for 20 years and retired for the past 20 years, and the past 20 were a lot better than the first 20." I remember seeing him playing golf for many years, even with that strange grip of his. I will miss him. Mick
