Dena (Withage) Kooy passed away peacefully on February 8, 2016 at the age of 95. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband John of 72 years; her children: Wayne (Mary) Kooy, Bea (Mike) Slavich, Brenda De Jong, Greg (Diana) Kooy, Garth (Andrea) Kooy and Ted Kooy; 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Her extended family includes Don (Bernice) Kooy and Gerry Kooy as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dena was preceded by her three siblings and three in-laws. Dena was born on the family farm near Nobleford, Alberta on June 12, 1920. After graduation from High School she obtained a business degree from Mount Royal College in Calgary, Alberta and worked in banking. In 1944 she married John Kooy and for the next 20 years she helped in the family farming and retail businesses and also raised their family. In 1965, the family immigrated to the United States, and she residing in Lynden until her passing. Dena lived a long and rewarding life which included enjoyment of her musical talents, recreational activities, travel, hospitality and practicing her Christian faith. Her family will miss her kind and caring heart, her faithful prayers for family and friends and her "high fives". In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dena's name to the Lynden Christian School Building Fund. You are invited to share your condolences and memorials in the online guestbook at www.gilliesfuneralhome.com. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 PM, Friday, February 12 at Gillies Funeral Home. A graveside committal will take place in Monumenta Cemetery on Saturday, February 13 at 12:15 pm, followed by a memorial service at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Lynden at 1:00. Arrangements are entrusted to Gillies Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Lynden.
