Born in Bellingham to Fred Coleman and Maybell Agnes Swope. A Bellingham resident most of his life he was a brother to 8 siblings including: Dee Rogers, Maybell Tremlin, Merle Barker, Claudia Rouse, John, Cliff & Karl Swope. Father to Karl Coleman Swope (Teresa) and Susan Schwab (Dave) Step Father to Jeff (Shannon) and Chad Wanlin. Grandfather to Jessica Soete (Nolan), Cassandra Horne (Daniel), David Schwab Jr. (Kristen), Coleman Schwab, and Jensen & Tyler Wanlin. Great Grandfather to: Harper & Piper Soete, Emerson & Reagan Horne. Dick played baseball and football at BHS and Legion baseball. He served in the US Navy in the Korean Conflict. He started his family in San Diego, moved to Bellevue and then back to his hometown to raise his family. In his early years back in Whatcom county he was an umpire, served in the Salvation Army Band, was a lifetime member of Bellingham VFW and Blaine Legion and later he served as a member of the Tall Elks Clowns through Elks BPO 194. He worked many years for Sanitary Service and, after retirement, he was Grandpa Nanny to David Junior for a couple of special years. Dick Married Leslie in 1996. They danced a lot, traveling in their motor home and making countless memories with many wonderful friends over the years. They were a great match and they loved each other well; Leslie was by his side right to his last breath. Dick loved his grandkids and sports. He was at all his grandkids Whatcom County sporting events and was "grandpa" to everyone he met. Dick will be remembered as a truly humble, caring, man; always fun with a quick wit and his big smile when you got his joke.
