Dorothy Munson Obituary

Dorothy D. Munson Dorothy D. Munson, age 91 of Bellingham passed away on Monday, January 24, 2011. She was born on November 18, 1919 in Philadelphia, PA to Carl and Elsie Dahlberg. Dorothy was an only child who grew up as part of the Dahlberg family from Ferndale and Evergreen. She married Herb Munson in 1941, and the couple lived on a farm in Pleasant Valley. There they raised four children, and were very active in their community. Herb and Dorothy moved to Laurel in 1966 and Dorothy lived out the rest of her years in Whatcom County. Herb preceded her in death in 1985. Being a child of the Depression, Dorothy loved to share stories of her childhood, and she had an amazing memory, never forgetting a name or a birthday. Dorothy enjoyed music, and was always whistling and singing. She had a way of making everyone feel like family, and was a precious wife and mother who lived her life for the people that she loved. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Dorothy is survived by her sons, John (Kathrine) and Skip Munson; daughters, Diane (Dan) Joy and Marsha (Sterling) Donalson; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and many beloved other relatives and friends. Visitation is scheduled for Friday, January 28th from 3:00-9:00 PM at Moles-Greenacres Funeral Home. John, Skip, Diane and Marsha. I was sad to hear of your loss. It was an honor and a gift to know her.
Whenever I talked to Dorothy, I felt like the most important person in the world. We were both only children with a bunch of cousins so we had a special bond.
To me, she was a light. She was generous, thougtful and kind. She was cheerful, gay and full of wit. The sound of her laughter was delightful. When she was blue or having a hard day, she never complained. Her focus was always on others.
During this fragile time, as you all process the loss of this amazing soul, I hope your most precious thoughts and memories of her will soothe you.
She was a rock and a touchstone and I believe she will be watching over all of you.

Whenever I spoke to Dorothy, she made me feel like I was the most important person in the world. Her kindness, her laughter, her cheerful manner, her way of listening and never judging, her gay and witty grace, her sense of fairness and above all her love will always remain with me. To know her is to love her with all my heart and I will miss her.
As you all process the loss of this amazing soul, may all the beloved Munson clan have courage during these fragile days of holding her close to you in your hearts, thoughts and memories.

I have felt Dorothy's presens the last few days. Memories I haven't thought about in a very long time. When I was a teenager, I considered her a best friend. Could talk to her about anything and everything. And of course as been said before, her singing and whistling were very special. Very talented..We Holmes kids adored her. When Karen and I were really young, she would pack a lunch of wonderful sandwiches, cookies and the best grape koolaide with lemons you could imagine. Dorothy, Our Mom, us girls and John and Skip would go across the creek on our property and pick Blackberries for the cannery. Loved being with her and Mom would have to call us for dinner..Great times..
Love to you all,
Johnny, Skippy,Diane and Marsha

You will always be in our hearts and memories...

I am so sad to hear of the loss of this wonderful woman, your mother. Countless chapters of my own childhood could have never been written without the influence of the marvelous Dorothy Munson. I spent much, much time of my youth with my Holmes' grandparents, and oft times felt I must be really, really special to have Dorothy - and Herb - as my 'extra' grandparents, my family; though I also had neighboring paternal grandparents just a stone's throw away down the road. I have been extraordinarily blessed with the influence of such wonderful persons in my life. Dorothy taught me much: she taught me frugality and how to use a sewing machine to sew my school clothes with my berry picking money, why Queen Anne cherries make the finest of pies and jams, rather than Bings, which are great for just eating, and to appreciate how the most simplest pleasures and accomplishments of those we love, the joys in our lives, are really ... the very essence of it; life. I miss her already, though I am quire sure she is at great peace and is most certainly sharing with the Angels of Heaven the special art and gifted talent of 'whistling to your heart's content'. It has been many, many years, but all of you, dear, dear people - John, Skip, Diane, Marsha - your families, had more positive influence and far-reaching impact on lives, and this one in particular, than you will ever, ever know. Take care, you dear and special friends; know that you are very, very loved and always thought most fondly of. Have peace in your hearts at your mom's memorial this Saturday. I wish I could attend ... the world was certainly an improved and much better place for Dorothy Munson having had been here. I love you, all.

To the Munson family,
Although I was not there at the end of your mom's life I was surely blessed to have known her if only for a little while. Thank you for sharing your mom with me.

Dorothy was a true friend and neighbor to all the Holmes family. One of my favorite memories from my childhood is hearing her singing and whistling whenever I visited, and that was almost daily. The Munson and Holmes families were closely blended and very much like one family. Dorothy was a true lady and will be missed by all who loved her beautiful spirit.
