Esther T. "Gami" Bliss

Esther Bliss Obituary

Esther T. Bliss, "Gami", age 92, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2011 surrounded by family and friends. She was born June 8 1918 in Kindersley, Saskatchewan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albertine and Ray Justason and her siblings Judy Groves, Pauline Justason, and Allan Justason, Also taken too soon were her beloved husband, Russell Bliss, and son, Stephen Bliss. As a young child her family lived in White Rock and Point Roberts, finally settling in Bellingham, WA. As a teenager struggling through the depression, Esther had to work to help support her siblings while her parents were working away from home. One of her most interesting jobs as a teenager enabled her to see the country. She traveled the United States selling magazine subscriptions and enjoyed collecting menus from her favorite restaurants along her travels. Upon returning to Bellingham, she met the love of her life who she married on May 9, 1941 and had two beautiful children. Esther worked for many years in downtown Bellingham at the Bon Marché, and finally retired from J.C. Penney. Esther and Russ had a shared passion for golf and were members of the Bellingham Golf & Country Club for over 50 years. Unfortunately, she was unable to continue her membership because they would not provide her with a senior discount and she could not afford the dues. She was beloved by many fellow golfers and continued to golf with them at Raspberry Ridge through 2010. Esther was a very social and active senior. She was involved in bridge club with a select and very special group of women for over 50 years. She continued to meet and play with these ladies on a regular basis until her death. She also belonged to the Bellingham Athletic Club for over 20 years, which she lovingly referred to as "Fat Class". She enjoyed working out with her daughter Diana, and especially enjoyed the effect exercise had on her golf swing. Esther was admired by all who met her and will be remembered for her bright smile, infectious sense of humor, and the sparkle in her eye when she thought of or looked at those she loved. She also will be remembered for her selflessness and compassion for others. Esther was a strong, self-sufficient woman who be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Esther provided much sunshine for the many special friends who supported her throughout the years. Esther is survived by her daughter, Diana Crandall (Jack) granddaughters, Renee Miles (Bobby) and Heather Foster (Joel) and great-grandchildren Kekoa & Mikala Miles, many nieces and nephews, as well as four beloved great-grand dogs. A Celebration of Esther's Life will be held Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge #194, 710 Samish Way in Bellingham. Esther was a fine lady and a great golfing buddy. She always had a little quip of her own and quite the sense of humor. I have fond memories of playing golf with her and Janet and Bev.
My sincere condolences and I am sure she will be "keeping and eye" on us.

Esther was the last of the "Rat Pack" who shared many great and fun memories together. Now they are all reunited, playing some golf and cracking up with laughter. She was the most caring, loving and selfless person who could always put a smile on your face. I'm so proud to have been her niece, she was always there for me when I needed her..Thank you Esther, I will miss you...Penny
