Florence Portlock

Obituary
The Guest Book is expired.

Flo was a Cinco De Mayo baby born in Bronx, NY in 1934 to Jane and Dave Schrager. She was the youngest of 4 ...Mark, Molly, Trudy and Flo. She married John Horton in Las Vegas in 1956. They had 2 children-Susan and John Jr. then moved from CA to NY and on to VA. Throughout the years, Flo maintained contact with the Horton family in Alabama. She later married Jim Portlock in VA and was accepted and loved by the Portlock family. She had many happy years working at retail stores including F.W. Woolworth before moving back to CA to help care for her mother. She worked for Thrifty Drug in Hollywood and enjoyed seeing the celebrities. Flo moved to Bellingham 20 years ago, after the death of her mother. Her sister Molly followed her to Bellingham from Wenatchee, where they both resided at Lincoln Square Apartments. Flo never lost her wit, NY sarcasm or southern hospitality. She enjoyed playing Bingo, winning at Scrabble, eating at Panda Palace, teaching math to her children and grandchildren by playing Blackjack, playing casino slots, BBQing year round, picking weeds from the driveway and being the matriarch of large family gatherings. At times she had a gruff exterior, but a kind, loving and generous heart to her family and friends. Flo is survived by her dear high school friend and her children's Godmother, Eileen Carini of NY, her sister Trudy Bernstein (Ralph) of NY, several special cousins, many nieces and nephews on both coasts, her children Susan Thurn (Don) of Bellingham, John Horton (Sydney) of CA, 5 Grandchildren-Jamie Huynh (Tri) of Ferndale, Renee Sheek of Bellingham, Clayton and Jarrett Horton of CA, and Bekah Thurn of Bellingham and 4 Great-Grandchildren-Calvinh and Tjasia Huynh of Ferndale and Adrienne and Corbin Hulett of Bellingham. She was also adored as "Grandma Flo" to the entire Huynh family. Our family appreciates everyone who helped to keep her happy, safe, and independent these last few years. A celebration of her life will be held at Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship on Monday April 4th from 5:30-7pm. ""ALWAYS IN OUR HEART". Burial will be later in the month in CA beside her mother.
