Fredrick Olsen Obituary

Frederick Alfred Olsen, 86, died in his own home on February 8th, 2011. He was born to Anton Alfred Olsen and Agnes Margarethe Reitan, both of whom were immigrants from Norway. They met and married while living in the Northwest; his father a sailor and his mother a nanny for a Snohomish family. Fred was their only child. He grew up on a four acre "stump" ranch in N.E Seattle and attended a relatively new Maple Leaf Elementary School. A GI Bill education after the 2nd World War made it possible for him to attend and graduate from the University of Washington, the Stout Institute, and the Ohio State University. After teaching at Ohio State University for several years Fred accepted a position at Western Washington College of Education where he served as a professor, in the technology department, until retirement in 1993. Teaching, playing handball, coaching W.W.U's handball team, clearing/burning brush, building rock walls, crackling fires in the fireplace insert, eating outside on his deck overlooking Bellingham Bay and tending his roses/fruit trees provided him with pleasure. However, he was most passionate about architecture. He designed and constructed three homes in his lifetime. He began with a frame structure in Bothell, followed by a used brick house on the southside of Bellingham where he resided for 48 years, and culminated with the building of a log home affectionately known as 'Cedarsted' in the Geneva area of Lake Whatcom. He is survived by his wife Clara of 63 years, son Fred ( Sandy), daughter Chris, grandson Scott (Erin) and great grandson Quentin. At his request, the advent of his death should not precipitate any formal observation. Should you desire to reminisce over his acquaintance with stories, whether true or false, take a friend to dinner. Making apple cider on his press, visiting his home and Chris' (that he built), and handball. Those are fond memories....

From the apple press days, back to when Nathan moved boulders from one spot in Fred's yard to another, these will always remain fond memories. We still refer to brush burning as the "Fred Olsen Way" from when he was clearing the land to build his log "cabin".

I've known Fred since I was around six years old, when my father would "tend" to the rabbits for him. He was always respectful to me, and I always had the sense that I was around a being of great humor and intellect. He was a friend of my family for years, and we are going to miss him.

I was a next door neighbor to Fred and Clara for nearly 20 years.I will always remember his kindness, the roses he brought over (if the deer didn't win the battle)and the conversations over the fence or over Clara's great desserts in their kitchen. I missed them as neighbors when I moved away...

Chris,

Bruce and I are very sorry for your loss. Please accept our condolences and share them with your family. We enjoyed participating in the pond building with your Dad, and hope he now rests in peace.

I had the privileged of teaching with Fred for about 12 years and knowing him for 18. I remember his sense of humor and his always having a new joke to tell and of course the practical jokes he pulled on fellow faculty. I learned a lot from Fred and considered him an excellent colleague and a friend. My condolences to Clara and the rest of the family.

Uncle Fred was a great uncle. We always enjoyed talking to him when he came to Columbus.
My Mother, Aunt Jean, My Husband Michael, and our children Allen and Jeremy visited in Bellingham and saw the great log cabin.
Uncle Fred was a very dynamic individual and will be missed.
Our Love to Aunt Clara, Cousin Fred, and Cousin Christine, and to the rest of the Olsen Family.

It was my pleasure to have been one of Mr. Olsen's students in his architecture class back in 1970. He was a good teacher in that he focused on "expanding your horizons" and "thinking outside the box". Please accept my condolences.

It was such fun to be around Uncle Fred. He always had interesting points of view, sent letters to the Editor, taught me how to drive a stick shift, always had wonderful meals prepared, got me interested in vitamins, helped me to appreciate his love of glass objects, etc. We had funny chats about so many varied topics. Listening to clasical music, watching a bird at a feeder, helping him stack wood, seeing him pick some blue berries, tending his garden, driving the dogs crazy and teaching them things, listening to a funny joke, going to a Univ basketball game, hearing about a handball event, or just chatting about the weather, all seemed so great when with Fred. Meals, travel adventures, and always an uplifting conversation is something you could know you would get if you talked to Uncle Fred. He was so wonderful to be around and always was such a hard worker at whatever he did. A few short sentances on a page can not convey all the feelings and emotions felt at this time. Lots of memories come flooding back as I think of all the great times shared with Uncle Fred and Aunt Clara. May God watch over the family and give them strength to get through all the changes.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Aunt Clara and the family. The good news is he is no longer suffering. The Holy Spirit will send the comforter & heal the broken hearts and one day we can all remember him with happy tears of happy memories.

Fred, my brother in law, was certainly active in the architectural activities and flower growing, especially roses. He loved my sister and took her out to his home area and built their homes with his own hands, but sometimes helpers. He liked the Norwegian dancing too. Whenever I visited them he was always gracious. I was happy when he decided to come to The Ohio State University and was here for several years getting his doctorate degree. He will be sadly missed by all his relatives in and around Ohio. Betty S. Patch
